The Kimberley is one of the most remote regions on earth — three times the size of England, with almost no roads. Scenic flights are the practical way to see Horizontal Falls, the Bungle Bungle Range, Mitchell Falls, King George Falls and the Cockburn Range.
Most flights depart Broome (for Horizontal Falls and Cape Leveque), Kununurra (for the Bungle Bungles and Lake Argyle) or Derby. Multi-day air safaris combine fixed-wing flights with seaplane landings on remote tidal inlets.
Full day — fixed-wing out, seaplane landing, jet boat through the falls, swim, fly home.
2 hours fixed-wing flyover, or full-day with helicopter landing in Cathedral Gorge.
Full day — fly in, helicopter shuttle to the falls, swim, fly out.
4–10 day air tours covering all major landmarks. From ~$5,000 pp.
Cessna 208 Caravans cover the distance. Most multi-stop tours use these.
Cessna 208 amphibians land at Horizontal Falls and Talbot Bay.
R44s and AS350s for Bungle Bungle landings and Mitchell Falls shuttles.
The only realistic window. 25–32 °C days, no rain, all roads and lodges open.
Cool nights, calm winds, perfect flying conditions. Book 6+ months ahead.
Flights significantly reduced. Mitchell Falls and many remote landings closed. Horizontal Falls still operates from Broome.
The classic Broome day trip is about 8 hours door-to-door including the jet boat and lunch on the houseboat. The flying itself is around 90 minutes total.
Yes by 4WD via Purnululu, but it's a long rough drive. A scenic flight from Kununurra is the only way to see the beehive domes from above — which is the point.
